James, a 21-year-old New Yorker, struggles to take control of his self-destructive performance in the face of momentous family challenges.James White (Christopher Abbott) is wedged in an endless cycle of self-destruction. He has just lost his father and fears behind his ailing mother (Cynthia Nixon) who he has been taking care of for years. He spends his days drinking, quiescent around and lashing out at others, doing something to avoid confronting his grief and emotions, which he keeps below the surface, bubbling and waiting to burst. Life has been excessive to him, and this behaviour that manifested sabotages any chance of livelihood or personal growth. He might be using his mother's situation as an excuse not to step out of his placate zone and try harder in life, which is sensible to some extent, but he can't seem to transform. In his prime, he is jobless and taking his mother's couch as a bed.

James White (Christopher Abbott) is a troubled twenty-something trying to stay floating in a frenzied New York City. He retreats further into a self-destructive, hedonistic lifestyle, but as his mother (Cynthia Nixon) battles a serious sickness James is forced to take control of his life. As the pressure on him mounts, James must find new treasury of strength or risk imploding completely.The best aspect of the movie is the drama. Nixon gives an genuine, heartbreaking presentation that's understated. Abbott, on the other hand, is given a disposition that requires patience and understanding to sympathize with. James internalizes many complex emotions all through the movie and what goes on in his brain is not always clear to the consultation. It's a tricky act to balance but Abbott pulls it off. Their mother-son relationship is the only thing that's confident in their lives and is the core of the movie.
James has a narcissist individuality and is on a drunken and drugged fueled descending spiral. He heads to Mexico with his friend Nick (Scott "Kid Cudi" Mescudi) to escape from from his responsibilities. While he seems to be in a continuous fog as a means of evasion his harsh reality he meets a girl Jane (Makenzie Leigh). Just as he starts to relax his mothers cancer returns and he receives that dreaded call. He returns house and has to put all of the expressively irresponsible crap following him and take care of her.
